Welcome
Team Organ Storage & Hibernation is an undergraduate research team part of the Gemstone Program, at the University of Maryland, College Park. Our project deals with the problem of organ transplantation - there is a massive shortage of donor hearts for transplantations yet there are many people in need. We are investigating the potential for hydrogen sulfide delivered through gelatin microspheres to serve as a novel approach to lengthen the viable storage time of donor hearts.

All of the students on the team are in the University of Maryland's class of 2011.
Research Question
Will a controlled delivery of hydrogen sulfide throughout the heart using gelatin hydrogel microspheres induce a state of hibernation that will dramatically prolong heart viability and reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury in transplants?
Please refer to the "Project" page for more information on the project's goals and timeline, and the "Research" page for more specifics about the team's research progress.
