What is cogeneration?
Cogeneration, also known as combined heat and power (CHP), is the sequential generation of electricity and useful heat. Whereas conventional power plants release heat as a byproduct of electricity generation, CHP plants capture and use this energy. In the University of Maryland College Park power plant, hot exhaust gasses from the gas turbine are used to boil water, and the steam-transmitted through a district heating system-is used for space heating and cooling applications in campus buildings.
What is Team Cogen researching?
Team Cogen is working to contribute to universities' plans to minimize carbon output by designing a combined heat and power system sized for a large university campus to minimize carbon emissions, and establish justification for industry investment in small, efficient turbines.
