The Problem and Our Goal:

Our goal is to make a  significant improvement in the energy density and cycle life of lithium-ion batteries. The continued development of many renewable energy sources relies on such an advance in lithium-ion battery technology, which will enable energy from alternative sources such as wind, solar, and water to be more effectively stored and available for use during off-seasons, when the availability of energy from these  natural sources often becomes unreliable.

What is Gemstone?

We are a team of 11 undergraduate researchers of different disciplines participating in the Gemstone Program at the University of Maryland. This four-year program allows students to do novel research in any chosen field.  The projects are proposed and driven by the undergraduates under the mentorship of an expert.
