What is Gemstone? The University of Maryland's Gemstone Program is the multidisciplinary four-year research program for undergraduate honors students of all majors. Students are selected into this unique program following their acceptance into the University, based on demonstrated academic and social excellence and achievements. The entering class of 2009 had a weighted GPA of 4.5 and an average SAT score of 1459 out of 1600. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, University librarian, and Gemstone staff, teams of students design, direct, and conduct research, focusing on the intersection of science and technology in society. Gemstone students are members of a living-learning community. This community challenges and supports students in the development of their research, teamwork, communication and leadership skills. In the fourth year, each team of students presents the culmination of its research in the form of a thesis to a panel of experts. Upon completion of this program, students receive a Gemstone citation and a tangible sense of accomplishment. |
