Section Leader Positions

Section Leaders are an essential part of the Gemstone Program.  Being a section leader is an excellent opportunity to teach and lead your peers.  Students regularly cite their SLs as a highlight of their Gemstone experience.

GEMS 100

GEMS 100 Section Leaders are hired in the spring semester to serve for the following fall semester.  Each SL will co-teach with another SL a weekly 75 minute class that orients new Gemstone students to the Program and the University.

Thank you for your interest in being a Gems100 Section Leader (Fall 2018). To apply, please complete an online application at go.umd.edu/gemsleadership18 no later than Friday, March 30th by 9am in order to be eligible for the group interview process held on Sunday, April 8th.

GEMS 102

GEMS102 Section Leaders assist new students in brainstorming research ideas and offer students the opportunity to form teams.

GEMS 104

GEMS104 Section Leaders facilitate discussions and help small groups of freshmen with their semester-long research projects.

GEMS 202

GEMS202 Section Leaders serve as peer mentors for brand new Gemstone teams as they develop a draft of their thesis proposal.

Payroll Forms

SLs receive compensation, either monetary or through credit.  If you are in a paid role you must fill out the appropriate payroll forms, found here.
