Dr. Frank Coale, Professor and Gemstone Director, was named one of the 2014 Soil Science of America Fellows. This prestigious award recognizing the contributions of Dr. Coale to advancing soil science is the highest recognition bestowed by the Soil Science of America.

Summer Receptions
May 2014
The Gemstone Program invites incoming Gemstone students and their families to attend one of our three Summer Family Receptions (July 8th, July 21st and July 27th). The first two receptions will be held on campus in the Portico Room at McKeldin Library and the last will be held at the Green family residence. We look forward to meeting you as we share helpful information about the program prior to move-in this August. The Gemstone Staff and current Gemstone students will be in attendance to answer your questions and share in your excitement about becoming a part of the Gemstone family!

Gems Camp
May 2014
Gems camp is an overnight orientation experience offered only to incoming Gemstone students. Gems camp is at the West River Center near Annapolis, MD. There are games, icebreakers, and other activities designed to introduce you to the Gemstone Program and UMD right from the start- and you'll return to campus with tons of new Gemstone friends! Over 80% of the incoming class typically attends Gems Camp- you won't want to miss out..

Free DC I-Corps Workshop for UMD teams

The DC regional Innovation Corps (I-Corps) program is now accepting university research teams from the DC, MD, and VA area for the 5-week Lean LaunchPad, technology commercialization and customer development workshop beginning March 24th. UMD is the lead institution running the NSF-funded program, and as such, teams from UMD will be given priority in this program.
