Congratulations Natalya Gallo!

Natalyo Gallo is a Gemstone alumni, who was a member of Team BREATHE and graduated from the University of Maryland in 2011. She is currently a PhD student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. She has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Switzer Environmental Fellowship for her passion and commitment to improving environmental conditions. Congratulations Natalya and good luck!

Funding Opportunity for Gemstone Teams

The Sustainability Fund provides funding for projects that promote environmental sustainability and positively impact the student experience at UMD. The priority deadline for applications is October 15 and the final deadline is January 15. Apply now!

2017 Winston Family Best Paper Award Recipients

April 19th, 2017

Jillian Kunze and Adam Berger won the 2017 Winston Family Best Paper Awards. Jillian’s essay, “Solar Cells in Outer Space,” was selected for the Best Essay category, and Adam’s thesis, “Surface Enhance Raman Spectroscopy Sensors for Detection of Drugs and Small Molecules: Towards Real-World Applications,” was selected for the Best Thesis category. We are very proud to congratulate our young scholars!

Team TESLA Wins Invention of the Year!

Alumni students from Team TESLA (2016) discovered a unique way to power devices from meters away, rather than just centimeters. There contribution was recognized at the Innovate Maryland Reception. Congratulations Team TESLA!

This past weekend Team BioCHIPS represented the Gemstone Program at Johns Hopkins University for a Biomedical Engineering Conference, where they won the award for Best Poster! Congratulations Team BioCHIPS!

Several Gemstone students participate in UMD Hyperlooop Space Competition!

February 9th, 2017

About 60 University of Maryland students are helping pave the way for high-speed travel and many of them are Gemstone students! UMDLoop brought its pod to SpaceX's first competition weekend in California from Jan. 27 to Jan. 29, where 27 teams participated. Read more about UMDLoop and its contribution so SpaceX here!

Dr. Anlage & Team TESLA Named Finalist for Invention of the Year Award!

February 9th, 2017

Congratulations to team TESLA and their mentor, Dr. Anlage, for being named a finalist for Invention of the Year Award! The team has found they can transmit power, such as by charging a cellphone, without knowing an object's location or disturbing its surroundings. Read more about the nomination here!

Congratulations to Gemstone senior Elfadil Osman for receiving the prestigious Gates-Cambridge Scholarship!

February 9th, 2017

Senior physiology and neurobiology major Elfadil Osman, on our very own Team MORALS, has been named a 2017 Gates Cambridge Scholar. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which allows students outside of the United Kingdom to pursue graduate study at the University of Cambridge, is considered one of the most prestigious academic awards available to college graduates. Elfadil plans to use the scholarship toward a Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. Read more about Elfadil and his accomplishments here!
